There were some excellent potential solutions to duplicate content discussed at the Duplicate content summit at SMX Advanced. I also learned a couple important points:

Duplicate content doesn’t cause your site to be penalized. If duplicate pages are detected, one version will be returned in the search results to ensure variety for searchers.

Duplicate content doesn’t cause your site to be placed in the supplemental index. Duplication may indirectly influence this however, if links to your pages are split among the various versions, causing lower per-page PageRank.

So to differentiate your original content from syndication, scraper sites, or internal duplication, it’s important to have the most links pointing to that original content.

For even more information about duplicate content, you might be interested in this post, Deftly dealing with duplicate content.

Google is beginning to grab a part of the top 10 search results for themselves. So far, they’ve been adding the following to page one of your search queries:

Google News listings that include images.

Google Local listings with embedded maps.

Google Video that you can watch right within your search results.

But it’s not all bad news. If you can get content indexed in one of Google’s verticals, like Google Video, Maps, or News, you could snag a listing on page-one that you might not have been able to get before.

Now is the time to optimize for video rankings, like YouTube and Google Video. Start now by creating simple screen capture video tutorials and link to them with the anchor text of the search term you’re trying to rank for. It’s also time to optimize for Google News, Images, Local, and Blog Search.

Don’t let Google Universal Search steal your top search listings.
Ask Dave Taylor!">Dave Taylor, author of a number of cool tech books, including the book that inspired this time-saving tip, Wicked Cool Shell Scripts, I was able to save myself a tremendous amount of time and energy. Time that I used to spend doing mind-numbing repetitive data entry can now be used to build my business. Here’s how you can your time back…

Let’s say that you are optimizing ten different web pages to be found on Google, Yahoo, and MSN and you’re optimizing each page for 3 different keyword phrases. Obviously, you’ll want to keep track of each of those keyword searches to see who’s making a run for the top and for when your page finally makes page one. That’s 90 different search engine results you have to follow.

What does the average marketer do? They type or copy and paste each keyword from a master keyword list into as many search engines as they are tracking and enter the results into a simple spreadsheet or database. If they are thorough, they will compare that data with the last time they did the search to see what’s changed.

That’s a lot of work and takes a lot of time. And most internet marketers are tracking a lot more than 10 different web pages. I’ve managed to narrow this tedious task down to a simple 11 character command.

Using Lynx, a powerful text-only web-browsing tool in Unix, I can track the changes on any website and have the results sent to my email. All it takes is a data file filled with URLs. What’s really slick, is this script only emails me when changes have been made to the page. Then, it’s simply a matter of sorting my email by subject and date to scan changes over a long period of time. No more Excel sucking the sexy out of my day.

There’s more than one use for this script. You can also use it to spy on your competition. Every time they make a change to their site, you’ll know and you can see exactly what they’re doing. If they’re doing any split testing, it won’t be long before you know which test won.

The workflow is simple. Type
changetrack
into Terminal. The results are waiting for you next time you check your email. In Mail, create a smart mailbox that sorts your results. If you use MailTags, you can create a to do in iCal if you need to take any kind of action. I’ve got some more automation tips on the Changetrack wiki page.

It might take you 30 minutes to get the script up and running. But over the course of a single month, it could save you hours. Not only will you save time and energy, but you will have very little resistance to tracking your search engine results — A time sucking task that most SEOs would rather not have to do. Plus, you could potentially increase your income by tracking the conversion secrets of your competitors.

You’ll find complete instructions on my Changetrack wiki page. If you have comments or come up with some other slick workflows, please share them below.

I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t mention the SEO consequences of duplicating the entire list from Darren Rowse’s Group Writing Project.

It’s never a good idea to duplicate someone else’s content on your own blog. You now have duplicate content issues and can very easily send your page into the Google supplemental index, a place you don’t want to be. Plus, you’re violating Darren’s copyright.

Fair use is one thing. But duplicating the entire post? Not a good practice. Plus, there’s ethics involved. Darren created and managed the project. He should get the traffic. So link back to him. You’re essentially taking traffic away from Darren by duplicating his content.

There. I hope I’ve made my point.

Google's related keywords feature doesn't come close to being as powerful as Wordtracker. But it does give you a glimpse into how Google responds to a specific keyword query. Here's how it works...

Google recently added a new feature to the define: search command. A query like define:marketing will bring back a list of related keywords like the following:

direct marketing
marketing plan
marketing mix
marketing research
search engine marketing
viral marketing
affiliate marketing
internet marketing
permission marketing
database marketing

Not only is this a great tool for generating lists of related keywords to implement in your search engine optimization strategy, it’s also useful in finding new niches or segments of your market that you may not have considered before now. You can even drill down further by clicking on one of the related keywords. It works very much like Wordtracker but doesn’t come close to being as powerful. But it does give you a glimpse into how Google responds to a specific keyword query.
But here is a simple method to make money from AdSense that you can give you an unfair advantage over your competitors. How? Because most people aren’t serious about enough to take the time and effort to add this income stream to their internet marketing efforts.

Most people want to use the fast and easy automatic software solutions to profit from AdSense. But are they really providing value to the web or to the end user? I think not. And Google will agree with me. I will always stick to creating unique content that’s informative and of high quality. Down the road, I’ll teach you how to delegate most of the work so you just collect the checks!

This method is for long term success. Search engines want quality content and if you try to trick them, your days on the web are numbered. So be smart and practice “white hat” SEO techniques. Make the web a better place for searchers.

Here’s what to do. Create a site similar to Ehow.com. It’s a free site that shows people how to do almost anything. They have thousands and thousands of pages of unique content on all sorts of subjects and the way they get traffic to their site is through the hundreds of links to them that not only bring traffic, but catapult them to the top of the search engines because of all the link popularity.

Notice how they have AdSense in all of their articles. That’s how they make their money. Follow their example.

Register a catchy domain name, something like xyzguides.com or learnxyz.com and start writing little 500 to 750 word action plans on all sorts of topics. Put AdSense front and center within the article and you’ve got yourself a money making website.

Not only will you make money instantly from your website, you will also build tons of quality content over time and you will have hundreds maybe even thousands of links pointing to you from all over the internet. This is the recipe for a top Google search result.

This is a very rough outline, but if you run with it and add new ideas as you learn them, this money machine will make you cash on demand!
